It’s good to be back on the Blog! In a way, my first piece of writing of the year always feels a bit like that first day back at the studio. It’s like homecoming – a welcoming return to the place where I can share my heart, my mind, and my passion, and especially my unwavering belief in the strength within each of us.
As the whispers of 2025 began to unfold, so did the thoughts for this first Blog of the year – gently taking shape amidst the tranquil beauty of Rooiels. Last week was our first visit to that amazing small coastal village, and we all fell instantly in love. Nestled along the scenic drive, between Gordon’s Bay and Pringle Bay, framed by the towering Kogelberg Mountains, Rooiels is simply a feast for the senses.
Every morning Mariné and I took Nina for a long stroll along the winding paths, appreciating the salty sea breeze with the earthy scent of fynbos and the majestic crashing of waves. We bonded and soaked in the joy of our granddaughter, her laughter, and tiny discoveries. I cherished the precious few days we had together.
…As much as I always marvel in the three weeks stepping away from the buzz and the early mornings and the routine, I’m always just as strongly reminded of all the reasons why I love our studio and its people so much…the shared laughter, the friendships, and the little moments that make our studio much more than a place to train. What comes to mind is how I appreciate the funny, wise, and sometimes downright outrageous things our members say every day. Sometimes it’s an unexpected pearl of wisdom between reps in a Power Pump class, sometimes it’s a hilarious complaint about a difficult step routine, and sometimes, it’s a comment, or a moment, that simply has to become a theme for a Blog post…
Last November Andrea enthusiastically started her fitness journey with us. One Tuesday morning after Rhythm Pilates class I heard Izelde say: “Welcome to the nuthouse, Andrea!” I instantly knew it’s something I needed to write about…
I guess, to an outsider Mirna’s Aerobic Studio might look like a complete nuthouse – a bunch of women who are unapologetically themselves, women who wear the same colours while exercising, women who don’t mind being recorded for YouTube purposes. There’s music pumping, laughter echoing, dancing like nobody is watching, moving like it’s the end of the world, determined faces and dramatic groans…
But is it really a nuthouse? No, we know better. Beneath the energy and occasional chaos and bloopers, is something rare and beautiful—a community that lifts each other up, sweats together, and finds joy in the struggle. It’s a place where inside jokes are as common as the dreaded last 16 reps, a place where wisdom is shared between sets, and where every challenge is met with grit AND humour. To us, it’s not just a gym; it’s home.
But why the Nuthouse? Because to us fitness isn’t about perfection. It’s not about being the strongest, the fastest, or the most flexible. It’s about showing up as you are, quirks and all, and pushing yourself to be a little better than you were yesterday. We laugh, we sweat, we sometimes trip over our own feet, but we keep going. The nuthouse is where progress meets fun – and trust me, the combination is magic.
Our loyal members, you are the heart of this wonderful nuthouse, bringing your energy, laughter, and a spirit of camaraderie that makes every workout unforgettable. Your dedication and energy inspire everyone around you, and you are the main reason why new faces feel at home with us!
At the helm, steering the sheer madness with passion and, hopefully, purpose, is me – trying to keep the momentum strong and ensuring that everyone feels supported and challenged. Then there’s Jacqueline, our unstoppable Duracell gym bunny, bouncing through workouts with endless energy and enthusiasm. She sets the pace, pushes the limits, and makes every workout look effortless.
And don’t be fooled by Michelle’s sweet smile – behind it is a powerhouse who bowls everyone over with her quiet strength and undeniable presence. She might greet you with kindness, but when the class starts, you quickly realize she means business! Together, we strive to keep the energy high, the motivation flowing, and the spirit of our studio alive.
The Roman philosopher Seneca once wrote, “There is no great genius without a tincture of madness”. And the famous actress Anna Paquin recently said: “I think you’ve gotta be a little bit nuts to pursue any kind of creative career…”
In One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Jack Nicholson’s character, McMurphy, storms into the psychiatric ward and shakes things up—challenging the rules, bringing laughter, and uniting the patients in rebellion against the mundane. That’s pretty much what happens in our ‘nuthouse’ of a studio every day!
From the outside, it might look like controlled chaos – members groaning, instructors yelling, and laughter erupting between sets. But just like McMurphy turned that ward into something more than just a place to exist, we’ve built something far beyond a fitness studio. It’s a place of freedom, friendship, and shared resilience, where we push limits, break through mental barriers, and remind each other that fitness, and life, should never be just about following the rules, but about embracing the wild, wonderful journey together.
Here at our studio, we embrace the beautiful chaos, the infectious energy, and the unstoppable drive that make our fitness family one of a kind. Whether you’re a seasoned member or someone considering taking that first step, this nuthouse is for everyone. Our community isn’t just about exercise; it’s about connection. We celebrate victories big and small, from finishing a gruelling workout to showing up on a tough day. And with our upcoming 6-week New Year fitness challenge, there’s never been a better time to jump in and see what’s possible.
This year, we’re more committed than ever to helping you find the joy in movement. We would like to show you, all over again, that fitness isn’t a punishment – it’s a celebration of what your body can do, and we want to continue creating an environment where you feel motivated, valued, and unstoppable.
No one’s here to judge you. We’re all just trying to be our best selves, one workout at a time. You come as you are. You bring your doubts, your nerves, and your water bottle, but I promise you’ll leave with a smile, a sense of accomplishment, and maybe a few new friends.
And now, it’s January 2025…The holiday glow has faded, and the resolutions are already seriously being tested. it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the idea of starting or restarting a fitness journey. But here’s the secret: you don’t have to go all in on day one. Fitness is about small, consistent steps that add up over time. Maybe today, you take a walk. Maybe tomorrow, you try a Bootybarre workout with us. Every little effort counts.
May 2025 be the year you step up, shake things up, and put yourself first, for a change – no matter where you are on your fitness journey! You don’t have to be part of our ‘nuthouse’ (though we’d love to have you!) to start moving, feel stronger, and unlock your best self.
Let’s discover that unwavering strength in each of us, let’s strive every day to be the best versions of ourselves, let’s not take ourselves too seriously, and, let’s all remember the words of Beau Burroughs: “Life has to be a little nuts sometimes. Otherwise, it’s just a bunch of Thursdays strung together.”
I guess, I AM a little nuts. A lot nuts! We all are! But I also know that right in the midst of the madness of this world, is my therapy…
Yours in fitness
Mirna
