…Sometimes, when the alarm wakes me at 4.10 on a Monday morning, I feel a bit overwhelmed when I start to think about all the things I need to do. I’m sure you are familiar with this feeling, when the pressure of our to do-lists, and everything that is expected of us, loom large. At those times there’s almost a sense that you must be something more than you already are, to live up to all the expectations. It’s then that the idea of not being enough finds a way into our thoughts…Know what I mean?
Then, I try to take a deep breath, soften, and force myself to return to the present moment. I try to remind myself that, even though I have tasks to complete and goals to conquer, I’m already all that I need to be, right here and right now.
I have experienced that this especially tends to happen to people in fitness – Often I witness how members refuse to let themselves celebrate and feel good until they’ve gotten to some sort of big milestone. The danger of these milestones is, that nothing ever feels quite good enough, so they never celebrate, and so, never feel enough…
The famous Dutch theologian, Henri JM Nouwen once said: “You don’t think your way into a new kind of living. You live your way into a new kind of thinking…” And this is what I would love our mindset to be at Mirna’s in 2025. Remember we said, “Progress over perfection”? So yes, this year we are also saying: YOU ARE ALREADY ENOUGH…
Yes, you. Right now. As you are. Not five kilos from now. Not when your abs show. Not when you can do a full burpee without cursing your instructor. Not when you fit into those jeans from five years ago. Not when your arms look a certain way, or your endurance reaches superhero levels. Right now, at this very moment, you are enough.
Too often, we approach fitness as if it’s a test of worthiness. We think, “If I just lose this weight… If I just get fitter… If I just tone up…” then maybe—just maybe—we’ll finally feel good enough. But that’s a lie the world has sold us for far too long.
The truth is – you don’t have to “earn” self-love. You don’t have to reach some magical number on the scale or complete a brutal workout to prove your value. You are already worthy. You are already capable.
I know what you’re thinking: “But I signed up for this New Year Challenge to change!” And yes, of course you did. But not because you are lacking. Not because there is something wrong with you. You signed up because you are investing in yourself, because you know you deserve to feel stronger, healthier, and more alive.
You may ask – If we are enough, why do we all still strive to change? And why, then, is change even necessary? Because being “enough” doesn’t mean being stagnant. Growth and change are part of the human experience. We evolve, not because we are unworthy, but because we all are capable of more.
Change is necessary because life is dynamic. Our bodies, minds, and circumstances shift over time. If we resisted all change, we’d be stuck. Growth allows us to discover new strengths, and live more fully. The key is to pursue change from a place of self-acceptance rather than self-rejection. We can love ourselves now, while still striving to be better, stronger, healthier, and wiser. Wanting to change doesn’t mean we’re not enough – it means we honour our potential.
The famous Oscar Wilde said years ago: “Discontent is the first step to progress”. Wanting more is not a bad thing. The more we want something, the more certain we can be that the venture will be important to us, and so will the growth of our souls. But life is not about changing who you are. It’s about discovering what you are made of.
So are our Fitness Challenges. These journeys are about more than just workouts and meal plans. It’s about proving to yourself that you are capable of hard things. The Challenges will change you, yes. If you go all out. You’ll get stronger, fitter, and more confident. But the most important thing you will gain, is the understanding that you were never lacking in the first place.
There will be days when you feel like a fitness goddess, ready to conquer the world. And then there will be days when you barely make it through the warm-up, and wonder, if breathing this hard, counts as cardio. You might think your legs have officially given up on life. You might wake up so sore that sitting down feels like an Olympic event. And that’s okay.
Progress is messy. It’s not a straight line. Some days, you’ll feel invincible. Other days, you’ll feel like a soggy noodle. So, why are you here? Why get up early? Why show up every day? Not because you need to become enough, but because you are enough. And every day that you show up, you are winning.
You are already enough. Right now. As you are. Even if nothing changes about you or your life. Your behaviour is what you do. It is not who you are. Your thoughts are what you think. It is not who you are. And your feelings are what you feel. It is not who you are.
You were never meant to be more or less—just boldly, brilliantly, and unapologetically you. And that is more than enough.
In the words of Elizabeth Gilbert: “When you know you are enough – then everyone around you will know you are enough too…”
